Melanchthonhaus
Plans for the new permanent exhibition
Philipp Melanchthon, Kupferstich von Albrecht Dürer, 1526 ‘Melanchthon and his house’ – this phrase could be used to describe the general theme of the new permanent exhibition. Over the centuries, the building’s structure has been only slightly modified. The rooms can still be experienced today in the same form that they have always had. This is why the house itself will act as the most important object in the new exhibition. In general, visitors will be able to experience the aura of the building without being distracted by exhibition objects and displays. Recent architectural research has enabled us to locate the Melanchthon family’s kitchen and dining room as well as the original location of the stairway. Information about Melanchthon the man, husband, and father will be presented to visitors with the help of modern display techniques. The historic interior of Melanchthon’s study – which was also the room where he died – will remain the central focus of the tour through the house.

Approximately 250 square metres of new exhibition space will be provided by the annex, which is being built on the adjacent property. This space will focus on Melanchthon’s diverse roles as a public figure: the scholar and Protestant reformer, the ‘foreign secretary’ of the Reformation, the author of the Augsburg Confession.
